Vetrarsól

CD

Icelandic folk band Árstíðir has recorded their first-ever a capella album, featuring tracks performed entirely without instruments. The album “Vetrarsól - Voices of the Winter Sun” will be released on November 8th 2024 and was recorded this year in the bands’ private studio in Reykjavík, Iceland.

The band first gained international recognition in 2013 when a video of their spontaneous performance of “Heyr himna smiður"—the oldest preserved Nordic hymn—went viral. Recorded in a German train station, this rendition struck a chord with audiences worldwide.

Following this, Árstíðir has frequently dedicated an entire segment of their live performances to a cappella singing, using just a pair of microphones. After shows, fans repeatedly urged the band to record and release an a cappella album. Inspired by this feedback, the band eventually decided to gather some of their favorite pieces from over the years and begin recording them.

“Vetrarsól - Voices of the Winter Sun" is the result of this effort— a 12-song album by Árstíðir featuring a carefully curated selection of traditional Icelandic vocal and choral pieces that highlight their homeland's rich cultural heritage.
The album includes songs such as "Heyr himna smiður," "Bæn einstæðingsins" (a frequent concert piece), and "Ljósfaðir," which was specially arranged by its composer for this album.
